DATA HOLDINGS

Please review the Data Quality Information Summary before using the SORCE data.

The raw telemetry (level 0) data are nominally downlinked twice a day from the spacecraft to ground stations at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility and a second in Santiago, Chile. The daily volume of data is roughly 120 Megabytes.SORCE data processing takes place at the LASP Science Operations Center where the higher level products are generated, usually within 24 hours of receiving the raw data.

Level 1A (time referenced instrument counts), level 1B (counts including calibration paramters and ephemeris data) and level 2 (irradiances at instrument resolution) data products are intended as internal products for use by the SORCE science team.

The standard data products which are available from the GES DISC include four level 3 products, two contain solar spectral irradiance (SSI) data and the other two contain total solar irradiance (TSI) data. There are also two model level 4 data products that will be available in the future. The TSI products are written in ASCII format, wheras the SSI data products are written using the new HDF5 file format. How to obtain the SORCE standard products is described in the data access section. The tables below summarize the standard data products:

Level 3 Products
Name Description File Sizes
SOR3SSI6
SORCE Level 3 Solar Spectral Irradiance 6-Hour Average
Contains the irradiance data generated by the SIM (300-2000 nm range at 1-34 nm intervals), SOLSTICE (115-300 nm range at 1 nm intervals), and XPS (1-34 nm at 5-10 nm intervals plus 121.6 nm at 1 nm interval) spectral instruments. These are averaged to provide 6-hourly values of the solar irradiance on a fixed wavelength scale, and normalized to one astronomical unit.

0.75 MB

(4x per day)

SOR3SSID
SORCE Level 3 Solar Spectral Irradiance Daily Average
Contains the irradiance data generated by the SIM (300-2000 nm range at 1-34 nm intervals), SOLSTICE (115-300 nm range at 1 nm intervals), and XPS (1-34 nm at 5-10 nm intervals plus 121.6 nm at 1 nm interval) spectral instruments. These are averaged to provide daily values of the solar irradiance on a fixed wavelength scale, and normalized to one astronomical unit.

0.08 MB

(once per day)

SOR3TSI6
SORCE Level 3 Total Solar Irradiance 6-Hour Average
Contains the total solar irradiance (a.k.a solar constant) data collected by the TIM instrument covering the full wavelength spectrum averaged at 6-hourly intervals. The data are normalized to one astronomical unit. 0.2 - 1.0 MB (cummulative file, delivered once a month)
SOR3TSID
SORCE Level 3 Total Solar Irradiance Daily Average
Contains the total solar irradiance (a.k.a solar constant) data collected by the TIM instrument covering the full wavelength spectrum averaged at daily intervals. The data are normalized to one astronomical unit. 0.1 - 0.3 MB (cummulative file, delivered once a month)

Level 4 Products
Name Description File Sizes
SOR4NM16
SORCE Level 4 Modelled Solar Spectral Irradiance 6-Hour Average
Contains modelled irradiance data from the SORCE spectral instruments (SIM, SOLSTICE and XPS). TBD
SOR4NM1D
SORCE Level 4 Modelled Solar Spectral Irradiance Daily Average
Contains modelled irradiance data from the SORCE spectral instruments (SIM, SOLSTICE and XPS). TBD
